Turks & Caicos Map Locus Google Satellite View

The Turks and Caicos are located 575 miles southeast of Miami, Florida and 30 miles northwest of the Dominican Republic. Flying time from Miami is about 1.5 hours. This British Crown Colony actually consists of 40 small islands and cays with a total land area of approximately 166 square miles. Primary islands are South, East, Middle, North, and West Caicos; Providenciales; Grand Turk; Salt Cay. The climate in Turks and Caicos is quite mild with an 80 degree annual average. The islands are characterized by stunning natural beaches and spectacular coral reefs.

Columbus was said to have landed on the Turks and Caicos islands during his 1492 voyages. The inhabitants were originally the Taino Indians and then the Lucayans. But by the middle of the 16th Century they had been victimized and eradicated by the Spanish. The 17th century saw the arrival of settlers from Bermuda who used slaves to rake salt for British colonies in America, and were later joined by people fleeing the American Revolution. The early economy of the islands revolved around cotton plantations and salt production. The fishing industry began to prosper in the 1950’s with lobster and conch being exported internationally. As with so many islands tourism grew rapidly in the 1950’s and 60’s and is now by far the dominant industry.

Turks and Caicos seemed to have developed “under the radar” of many people and investor groups. The glorious Grace Bay area in Providenciales boasts numerous resort hotels and upscale residential development. The island has prospered over the past ten years to become a vital Caribbean upscale tourist destination. Now the growth is spreading to the less-developed islands. People seeking a safe, secure environment with superior growth potential are finding the islands of Turks and Caicos an ideal selection for their lifestyle and investment choices. The proximity to the mainland of the US has also been an asset.
