Saint Martin Map Locus Google Satellite View
A unique aspect of Sint Maarten (Dutch) and Saint Martin (French) is that it is the smallest territory in the world to be shared by two countries. There are no formalities in crossing from one part of the island to the other. Located 144 miles east of Puerto Rico at 18.01°N and 63.03°W, St. Maarten is divided into 17 square miles on the southern, Dutch side, and 20 square miles on the northern, French side. The island is roughly square, with a dogleg extending from the southwest corner. The coastal areas are much flatter than many Caribbean islands, but there is a mountainous interior.
The island has been a free port since the original “Mont des Accords”: there are no customs, no import taxes, nor government tax. During the frenetic building period of the past five to ten years both the Dutch and French sides have experienced tremendous development and are considered to be near the realistic saturation point. The Dutch side over the years has been more accommodating to outside investors. Casinos and large resorts are in abundance. Dutch is the official language, but English is spoken everywhere.

Nearly 75% of the work force in St. Maarten is employed in tourism related industries. The remainder service the finance industry and trade with other islands. Dutch St. Maarten has the highest per capita income in the Caribbean. St. Maarten is the only true duty-free port in the region. Trade with other islands, especially in electronic, household and apparel items, is in the tens of millions of dollars annually.
The island is considered one of the most cosmopolitan of the entire Caribbean with an excellent international tourism sector. The airport is quite comprehensive and serves as a US and European hub.
