Located between Martinique and St. Vincent, about 3/4 of the way down the Antillean chain, St. Lucia covers 238 square miles. This is a physically dramatic Caribbean island, with dense tropical forests, the towering peaks of Gros Piton and Petit Piton, a volcano, sulfur springs, mineral baths and secluded beaches.
St. Lucia presents what by most opinions is now a rarity in the Caribbean: a natural wonderland of lush, mountainous topography and a mostly undeveloped island. Currently, St. Lucia's commodities are simple: ubiquitous, coconut palms, banana plantations, and radiant colors. Development is certainly occurring, but the island will continue offering raw beauty for many years to come.
Agriculture is St. Lucia’s primary industry, although negative impacts have been experienced over recent years. A variety of crops are grown on a full 35% of St. Lucia’s total land area and an additional 9% is devoted exclusively to bananas. As with all of the Caribbean islands, tourism is taking a much more important role in the economy, with a 300% increase in the past decade. As other islands become more developed (and less desirable), the larger, less crowded islands such as St. Lucia are becoming more attractive. St. Lucia is currently experiencing a rush of growth in both its hospitality and real estate sectors.
