Antigua Map Locus Google Satellite View

After several years in the doldrums Antigua is witnessing increased favor from the developmental sector. Several major investor groups have selected the island for new resort projects. The island has a substantial infrastructure and major international airport. The island’s capital, St. John’s, an historic Caribbean town, features numerous classic buildings throughout the city, as well as numerous shops, restaurants, and services. English Harbour lies on the south side of the island, and features the renovated Dockyards of Admiral Lord Nelson. Hotels dot the rim of the island. The west coast is home to some of the more popular hotels as well as an archaeological site dating to 1775 BC. The east coast is more rugged and isolated, but features more exclusive properties.

Antigua’s sister island of Barbuda lies thirty miles north of Antigua. This nearly uninhabited island of 62 square miles is mostly wilderness and beaches. The one village, Codrington, is home to all of the island’s 1,200 residents. Barbuda has recently seen the development of a premier resort and there is anticipation of further growth. Recently, there has been serious interest for development of an eco-styled resort to take advantage of experiencing the unspoiled environs. Barbuda offers some of the most pristine areas of the Caribbean.

For many outside investors Antigua offers great potential. The country’s political and business establishments actively encourage investment and are pleased to assist most enterprises. A number of programs are available. The Fiscal Incentives Act provides tax holidays for certain manufacturers of up to fifteen years. No restriction is made on the repatriation of profits, and raw materials, components and equipment may be imported duty free during the life of the tax holiday. In addition, Antigua falls under the Caribbean Basin Initiative, which allows duty free importation of certain items to the United States.
